In December 2011, Noreen Barbe, Adolphine Mukamanzi and Marie Ntaganda traveled to Rwanda. During their stay, they visited the village of Kavumu, where children and parents came to welcome them. The parents mentioned that their children traveled two hours to get to the closest school every day, which was particularly hard for the younger children. At the end of the day, the children came back exhausted, with no food or drink left in their lunch boxes. Many of them get discouraged because they still have to complete their household chores and domestic duties upon their return.
After their trip, the ladies put a team together called Inzira y’Urumuri - Le chemin de la lumière to start raising money to build a school for these children. To date they have raised enough money to build 3 kindergarten classrooms. Today, over one hundred students attend the school.
To continue to reduce poverty and promote education and health for the less fortunate of communities in Canada and the world.
To improve quality of life and give the less fortunate opportunities by teaching them skills to become autonomous, responsible and eventually agents of change within their communities and their countries.
